Q
I bought a new (1960's but new to me) house last month and have encountered a very troublesome tile cleaning project. The kitchen and hall are tiled in what seems like a very solid 45 year old red/brown quarry tile with reddish/brown grout in the kitchen and grey grout in the hall. The tile has been neglected for many years and is very dirty (in many areas the grout looks black!) and is actually sticky in many areas. To add insult to injury the cleaning service put Mop & Glow on all of the floors the first (and maybe LAST time they came to clean for me). Now all of the floors are dirty and sticky and nothing seems to cut through this mess. I've even resorted to solutions of muratic acid and phosphoric acid (not at the same time though). The very strong solutions seem to cut through the mess a little but there are several hundred square feet of this tile, plus 3 bathrooms with glazed tile in the same conditions, and it seems like an insurmountable job at this point. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Ken

Acid is a very bad idea and may damage the floor permanetly. Mop and Glow isn't good either. You need an alkaline stripping solution. I would consider renting a floor scrubber with a brush and follow the instructions on the container.
