Q   I really need expert advice on the type of tile I can use for a swimming pool. The mosaic, pool tiles, while really beautiful, are just simply too expensive. We have considered slate, aggregate and tile. TILE What kind of tile?...Do we need to find porcelain tiles?...will glazed ceramic tiles be OK?...why or why not? We're in the Philippines so no real swings in weather...uniformly warm...sunny, rains about 3 months in the year. AGGREGATE We like this...pool aggregates from Asutralia (Quartzone)...Not a problem except for leadtime. Our local supplier needs about 60 days to ship. SLATE We've been discouraged from using slate although no one has really told us specifics on why we shouldn't except that it is porous (so?), it is susceptible to water stains (but it'll be underwater!), it may sheet (will all kinds of slate do that?). If anyone has any advice, we'd really appreciate it.

A   Given a moderate climate, chemical resistance is really the only requirement. Slate would be typical be trouble, shaling and lack of chemical resistance.
