Q
I had a visitor to my website email me the following question. Let me know what you think. Is it possible to restain a floor that is in good shape. there seems to be no wax or urathane coating just light stain color that is pretty even. I thought that a light sanding with an orbital floor sander and a light grit will smooth out the floor, but not take out all the stain unless I was a lot more agressive than I really have time to devote. My thought was to use a slightly darker stain than the present lighter color to recoat the floor and then use a coating for protection? I'm in PA so a bit far to have you stop by...:-) I have approx 550 sq. feet to do in three rooms. Thanks for any advice. RM

sure you can restian the floor without pulling all the old stain off,but the condition of the floor needs to be considered in this cause if it is in bad shape then what you are doing will just make it look that much worse,so if you are not concerend about the outcome of the floor then go ahead.
The proper method is start with a heavy grit paper and remove all the stain and finsish fill the holes and wide gaps and then sand a couple more times and then refinsish, now that is just a short version of what needs to happen but you get the picture.
So if the look is not an issue then go ahead, but keep in mind that this not the proper way to do this
