Hi. I'm new to the board so please forgive me if someone has answered this already. I am remodeling a 1920's house and am taking up the old carpets which covered some really beautiful hardwood floors. In taking up the carpet in the dining room, I found another carpet underneath which was the old kitchen carpet with the rubber backing. How can I get this backing off the hardwood floor without damaging the wood? Is there some solvent or solution?
Thanks.

Jerri,
The problem is, the glue from the carpet has already discolored the wood. You COULD scrape the rubber off the floor, sand the floor, then refinish it with a matte finish. When you polished the floor, you would end up with an antique look. It's very attractive in the right kind of home.
The only way to make it look like new is to glue engineered hardwood to the sanded, existing floor.
Many Thanks, Jim Brothers
