Q   The berber carpet (color is an off-white, grayish with small specs of color)that came with the home we purchased two years ago has several large stains that continue to "re-appear" after cleaning. They appear as darker areas, which I definately did not notice before we purchased the home. I also am certain that we did not cause the majority of them. They are very large spots and we certainly would have remembered causing them. We do not have children or pets! I have had the carpet "dry chemical" cleaned, which seemed to remove the stains intially, however they have all reappeared. I had read that some of the cheaper (non nylon or wool) berger carpets are infamous for this characteristic. Help! Is there anything I can do? Also, is there any way I can find out what type of material my berber is made of

A   Wicking is a very comman problem with all carpets, not just berber.

Anyone with a wicking problem has had the carpet backing, cushion, or subfloor soiled. (Usually with a liquid) When a carpet is cleaned, the soil is removed from the yarn and primary backing and left in the secondary backing, cushion and/or subfloor. If the carpet is left "damp" after cleaning, (with water or chemicals) then the soiling wicks to the surface.

I've had good luck using Capture 2 or 3 times. I've had people tell me they had good results using a spotting solution and a clean, white towel. If you use the towel method, don't rub it in. Spray the spotting solution on the spot. Place a heavy object on the towel. Let the soiling wick through the carpet into the towel. It may take 2 or 3 times.

Many Thanks, Jim Brothers
