Q   I had my sculptured berber carpet cleaned approx. 1 yr. ago by a company that assured me that the best way was to "dry foam" clean it. The process was quite simple. He merely mixed a product in a hand-held spray bottle and sprayed in on the carpet, followed by a buffer-like piece of equipment. Where soiled, he sprayed extra, assuring me that it would not matter. Within 2 weeks of "cleaning", those soiled areas were gathering dirt at a rapid rate. After much argument and their refusal to come clean it again, they refunded my purchase price. In our final conversation, I was told that I should have had it steam cleaned. They originally told me that because of the sculptured pattern, it could not be steamed. Who's right? AND if I steam it myself, what should I add to the water to cut the "gummy residue left by their "foam" method?

A   I hate this kind of letter... because someone in my industry gave bad information.

Never put soap (foam) in carpet ... NEVER. It's like shampooing your hair without rinsing it. It is difficult if not impossible to remove. It leaves behind a film that attracts dust in the air like a magnet. Hence, your problem with quick resoiling.

Pattern Berbers clean the same as other carpets... steam without soap is fine... hot water usually works great....all by itself.

Never never never use a circular scrubbing machine on carpet. It was not made to be twisted into a circle ... and it only polishes the top of the fiber at best ...and that is temporary.

Go rent a steam cleaner and fill it with hot water.... then be prepared to do every area 10 times or until it stops foaming in the exhaust tank... and it will foam and foam and foam...

I'm sorry but I hope this information helps you on caring for your next carpet....

I wish you well

best
